The Azores is a wine region in Portugal, with Pico, Biscoitos and Graciosa among the wine areas shown here. On volcanic Pico, a 987-hectare UNESCO World Heritage vineyard landscape preserves a cultivation system that was once much more widespread. Viticulture there dates to the fifteenth century.
Long stone walls follow Pico's rocky shore, enclosing small plots called currais and protecting them from wind and seawater. Wine quality on Pico has improved in the contemporary period. Arinto dos Açores is more acidic than Verdelho, which is more acidic than Terrantez do Pico.
Biscoitos PDO wines are fresh and moderately alcoholic, with pronounced acidity, mineral notes and salinity. Graciosa PDO wines are also fresh and moderately alcoholic, with pronounced acidity, mineral notes, minerality and salinity.
