Alentejo

Alentejo spreads across Portugal's open southern plains, where vineyards share the view with cereal fields and cork and holm oaks. Its eight PDO sub-regions differ in hills, soils and altitude, producing wines from fresher Portalegre bottlings to the region's fuller styles.

Alentejo is a Portuguese wine region of broad, gently rolling plains, with vineyards beside cereal fields, cork oaks and holm oaks. The open landscape limits Atlantic influence, but local hills help distinguish its eight PDO sub-regions: Portalegre, Borba, Redondo, Évora, Reguengos, Granja-Amareleja, Vidigueira and Moura.

The region makes red, rosé and white wines, often described as aromatic, rounded and smooth. A fruit-forward modern style developed in the 1990s. Warm red blends may include Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca. In white wines, Antão Vaz and Roupeiro are often joined by Arinto for acidity. Antão Vaz suits the sunny plains and can bring perfume, structure, ripe tropical fruit, tangerine peel and discreet mineral notes.

Portalegre's altitude and cooler conditions bring more freshness. Vidigueira, the southernmost sub-region, has Alentejo's mildest climate and a longstanding white-wine tradition. Reguengos combines poor, stony schist soils with a continental climate, producing powerful wines with ageing potential. A PDO label may also name the specific sub-region.
