La Libertad's wine activity is centred inland in Cascas and Gran Chimú, not spread evenly across the department. Cascas, the capital of Gran Chimú Province, lies about 100 kilometres east of Trujillo. Its vineyards draw irrigation from the Cascas River, while Lucma, Marmot and Sayapullo are also important grape-growing districts.
Cascas began cultivating Gross Colman and Lavallet in 1963. Commercial wine production began in 1983, after El Niño damaged grape crops. Gross Colman is used for dry, semi-dry and sweet reds, alongside fruit wines, other red wines and a local style called "wine of the gods."
The area also produces puro de uva, a grape spirit sold in Peru as pisco. The regional government has recognised Cascas as the regional capital of grapes and wine, and its grape festival as the regional harvest festival.
