Most of Montenegro's commercial vineyards sit between Podgorica and Lake Skadar, in the country's largest wine region. The ground changes across the basin, from fertile alluvial plains to karst and terraced slopes. Lake and mountains temper a Mediterranean climate with continental influence.
Vranac anchors the reds, joined by Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Krstač and Sauvignon Blanc-group varieties make up the white side, while Chardonnay appears in semi-sweet and barrique styles. On Podgorica's low plains, Vranac is favoured; slightly higher sites can give whites more balance and freshness. Seven subregions make up the basin, including historic Crmnica near Virpazar and higher Piperi, where slower ripening is associated with freshness and aromatic intensity.
