Coastal Montenegro follows the Adriatic from the Croatian border to the Albanian border, with steep mountains behind the shore and islands offshore. The region includes Herceg Novi, Kotor, Tivat, Budva, Bar and Ulcinj, where most commercial vineyards are found.
Mild winters, sunny summers and sea breezes shape the coast. Steady Adriatic winds help reduce disease pressure in the vineyards. Reds from Vranac, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Kratošija tend to be ripe, deeply coloured, full-bodied and softly tannic. Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Krstač give fresh, aromatic whites with lively acidity and mineral notes. Krstač is Montenegro's dominant indigenous white grape, while Vranac is known for its powerful, robust character. A traditional young wine is released from 15 November until 31 March.
