Marche has six sub-regions and 21 named appellations. In the north, Bianchello del Metauro follows the Metauro River basin from the Adriatic Sea to the Cesane Mountains. Made from Bianchello, also called Biancame, with up to five percent Malvasia bianca lunga, it is typically fresh, young and bright.
On the Conero Riviera, Rosso Conero is based on Montepulciano grown on the hills, where sun-driven ripening meets freshness from the sea. Verdicchio provides a useful contrast between Castelli di Jesi and Matelica. Historic Classico hillsides around Cupramontana give Castelli di Jesi greater depth and definition. In Matelica, a north to south valley and strong seasonal temperature swings bring more body, concentration, vibrant acidity and a lightly grippy texture. The wines can show apple, hawthorn and broom, with bitter almond on the finish.
The Macerata Hills combine inland earth with a marine breeze. Producers revived the local Ribona grape and work with it alongside Sangiovese and Montepulciano. Further south, the Piceno denominations include Rosso Piceno, Offida, Falerio and Terre di Offida, where Pecorino and Passerina appear in sparkling and passito wines.
