Chieti occupies Abruzzo's warmer south, where hills descend to the Costa Teatina. The wines tend to be soft and generously fruited, with mellow Montepulciano reds and Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo, the region's cherry-bright rosé. The rosé is a local choice with fish from the coast. Most of the province's wine is sold under the region-wide appellations.
Tollo, Villamagna and Ortona have their own appellations
Names to know
The smaller appellations include Terre Tollesi around Tollo, Villamagna in its named village for concentrated Montepulciano, and Ortona along the coast. Look for these names when you want a more specific origin than the region-wide appellations.
