Galilee runs from the Mediterranean coast to the Sea of Galilee, through ridges, valleys, gorges, streams and forests. Vineyards range from sea level to 1,200 metres, with Mediterranean to cool-continental conditions across the region. Annual rainfall is roughly 500-800 millimetres, and the growing season is long.
Terra rossa, limestone and volcanic basalt all occur here. Some vineyards combine limestone, volcanic material and gravel. Cool nights help grapes retain acidity, while higher sites are associated with more elegant wines. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah are the main red grapes, alongside Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.
Wine has deep roots in the area. Tel Kabri held the largest Canaanite wine cellar yet discovered, dating to about 3,800 years ago, and local wines were consumed and exported across the ancient Near East. A Galilee label can also appear on wines grown in the Golan Heights.
