The Neckar gives Württemberg its shape. Germany's fourth-largest wine-growing region had 10,694 hectares under vine in 2025, with Württembergisches Unterland on the middle Neckar at its centre and Remstal-Stuttgart to the south. Vineyards also run through the protected valleys of the Rems, Enz, Kocher, Jagst and Tauber, and reach Lake Constance. Of its 210 listed single vineyards, many are steep and divided into small parcels.

Red grapes cover about 65 percent of plantings. Trollinger and Lemberger lead the way, Lemberger being the local name for Blaufränkisch; Spätburgunder and Schwarzriesling are also important. Riesling accounts for about half of the region's white-wine production. Schillerwein combines red and white grapes. Deeply weathered Keuper marl is widespread, while steep Muschelkalk slopes have narrow terraces with heat-storing natural-stone walls. More than 50 cooperatives market about 80 percent of Württemberg wine.
