Franken's vineyards follow the Main River, between the Rhön Mountains, Steigerwald, Tauber Valley and Spessart. The region has a continental climate, with warm, dry summers and cold winters. In 2025, it covered 6,040 hectares of vineyard land.

Three Triassic soil families divide the region's map: Buntsandstein in the Mainviereck, Muschelkalk around Würzburg in the Maindreieck, and Keuper around Iphofen in the Steigerwald. White wine accounts for about 83 percent of production. Silvaner is Franken's defining grape and covers a quarter of its vineyards. Müller-Thurgau is the second most planted variety, while Bacchus remains a regional white-wine specialty.

Dry Franken wines are closely tied to the Bocksbeutel, the region's flat-bellied bottle. Its whites have fine fruit, while the reds are known for fine-fruited aromas, a velvety texture and restrained tannins.
