Moravia, or Morava in Czech, has four subregions: Znojemská, Mikulovská, Velkopavlovická and Slovácká. The climate combines Atlantic humidity with cold continental air, and grapes ripen slowly. Mikulovská is mainly white-wine country, with calcareous soils, clay and sand. Its grapes include Welschriesling, Grüner Veltliner and Sauvignon. Velkopavlovická has warm winds and magnesium-rich soils and grows red grapes such as Frankovka and Modrý Portugal. Slovácká's higher vineyards make fresh, aromatic wines, while Znojemská in the west is known for aromatic whites. Across Moravia, growers also plant Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer, Pálava, Pinot Blanc and Muscat varieties.
