Tarija

Tarija is Bolivia's principal wine region, with vineyards in high valleys between the Andes. Altitude gives this tropical-latitude setting a temperate growing climate. The red grape Tannat makes deeply coloured, firm wines. Tarija also produces sparkling wines and Singani, a grape spirit made from Moscatel de Alejandría.

In Tarija's Central Valley, vines lie at roughly 1,800 to 2,200 metres, exposed to strong ultraviolet light and cold southerly winds called saurazos. Bolivia's first commercial Tannat plantings were made here in 1999. The grape can give deeply coloured, rich reds with pronounced tannin, the drying grip in the mouth. Producers also grow Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. Wines range from fruity styles with little oak influence to oak-aged Tannat and Cabernet, alongside sparkling wines. Moscatel de Alejandría is used to make Singani, a Bolivian grape spirit whose specified production zones include Tarija's Central Valley.
