Winegrowing in North Tyrol is recorded at Sautens around 965. Today's growing areas include the Zillertal, Innsbruck, Telfs and the Oberland, where Tarrenz has the largest vineyard area. Stable autumn weather and little fog can allow grapes to remain on the vine longer. Days are warm and nights cool. White grapes include Chardonnay, Sylvaner and Weißburgunder; reds include Blauburgunder and Zweigelt. Newer plantings include Solaris and Cabernet Jura, two disease-resistant varieties described as PIWI. Tyrol is the English regional name. Tirol is the protected wine designation covering the Austrian province. It belongs to the wider Bergland wine-growing region alongside Vorarlberg, Salzburg, Upper Austria and Carinthia.
