Kärnten is Carinthia's wine area in southern Austria, south of the main Alpine ridge. Most vineyards are alpine slopes between roughly 400 and 750 metres, with cool spring conditions and high rainfall. Vineyards around Lake Wörthersee are part of the area's wine landscape. Medieval church institutions helped spread viticulture through much of Kärnten. Its white wines are associated with freshness, fruitiness and balanced acidity. Rieden are named vineyards and can locate the grapes more closely on a label.
