Carinthia lies in southern Austria, south of the main Alpine ridge and near the borders with Italy and Slovenia. Vineyards cluster in the south and southeast, while the western mountain valleys have scattered plantings. Most sit on slopes between roughly 400 and 750 metres, usually facing southeast, south or southwest.

Viticulture has a long history here. Medieval church institutions helped spread it through much of Kärnten, but downy mildew later destroyed almost all the vines. Herbert Gartner planted at Burgstall in the Lavanttal in 1972, beginning the modern revival.

White grapes account for about 80 percent of vineyard area. Sauvignon Blanc has the largest share, joined by Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Muscateller and Traminer. The whites are associated with freshness, fruitiness and balanced acidity. Stainless steel is the usual vessel, though some producers also work with larger wooden casks and amphorae.

Kärnten's first Rieden regulation, introduced in 2024, identified 56 defined vineyard sites east of Villach. A Riede names a clearly defined growing area with comparable site and soil conditions, giving the regional name a more specific place reference.
