Vayots Dzor

Vayots Dzor is a wine region in southeastern Armenia, around the Arpa River valley and surrounding mountains. Vineyards sit at 1,200 to 1,800 metres in relatively dry conditions. The red grape Areni makes sparkling wines, rosés and reds; its red wines can have cherry, black-pepper and black-tea aromas with firm, drying tannin.

Producer coverage

Read about Vayots Dzor below, or explore the region on the map.

Vayots Dzor has mild mountain summers and abundant sunshine. The ground includes volcanic tuff, limestone and basalt. Areni is closely associated with the region, especially the western vineyards beside the Arpa River. Also called Black Malahi, Black Areni or Areni Noir, it is used for sparkling wine, rosé and red. The reds can be full-bodied, with firm drying tannin and cherry, black-pepper and black-tea aromas, and can develop with age. Wine culture declined during the Soviet period. The present revival includes newer small and medium businesses, many run by families.
