Tavush lies in northeastern Armenia, bordering Georgia and Azerbaijan. Much of the region is 800 to 1000 metres above sea level, yet its climate is very mild and winters are comparatively warm. Abundant sunlight, altitude and warmth provide the stated conditions for grape growing.
White wines are the clearest way into Tavush. Local varieties are associated with fresh, aromatic whites, and the region is particularly suited to white-wine production. Banants, Lalvari, Garan Dmak, Kangun and Karmtahyut all appear in its grape list; Kangun is among the most commonly cultivated. In Koghb village, Lalvari grapes are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness for Tus White, a dry white wine.
About half of Tavush is forested. Mountain streams, rivers, lakes and mineral springs are also part of the region's landscape.
