Syunik is a wine region in Armenia with mountain ranges, river gorges, alpine meadows, forested mountains and Meghri's warm valley. The province includes Sisian, Goris, Kapan and Meghri. It has vineyards, though it is not generally considered a major wine-production centre.
Armenia has no true appellation system, so Syunik on a label identifies a place rather than a fixed grape or wine style. Locality names add more geography, but they are not formal quality categories.
One of Syunik's clearest vine details comes from its wild grapes. Researchers collected 61 samples in pre-mountainous natural habitats, and Syunik's group was the most genetically diverse among those compared. That describes the region's wild vines, not the style of a commercial wine.
