The Producer
Jean-Luc Zuger directs Château Malescot Saint-Exupéry alongside Catherine Zuger, with Michel Rolland as winemaking consultant. The Margaux property traces its roots to the Escousses family in 1616, and Boissac built the classical château still used by the estate.
Place
Château Malescot Saint-Exupéry belongs to the Margaux appellation. La Dame de Malescot carries the Haut-Médoc appellation, giving the named red wine a different appellation address from the château wine.
Wines
The two named wines occupy different appellation positions. Château Malescot Saint-Exupéry is the Margaux wine, while La Dame de Malescot is a 2018 red wine with Haut-Médoc appellation.
The wine carrying the château name ages for 14 to 16 months in French oak barrels, with 80 to 100 percent new oak. French oak exposes wine to gradual oxygen exchange and can add spice as tannin softens during ageing.
Final Word
Simon Malescot acquired the property in 1697, and Count Jean-Baptiste de Saint-Exupéry acquired it on 5 February 1827. Both names remain in Château Malescot Saint-Exupéry.
