The Producer
Gabriel Ferrière, an eighteenth-century royal official responsible for the king's hunts, founded Château Ferrière. The estate was classified as a Troisième Cru in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification. Troisième Cru means Third Growth, a rank in the historic Bordeaux list.
The Villars family purchased the vineyard and buildings in 1988. Claire Villars-Lurton is the current owner and manager of Château Ferrière.
Place
Margaux lies within the Médoc, and Château Ferrière's vineyard sits in the Margaux appellation. An appellation is a defined geographic designation, so Margaux names the place associated with the wine rather than its grape or cellar method. The estate's named wine carries the Margaux designation.
Wines
Château Ferrière is a red wine from the 2001 vintage, carrying the Margaux appellation and the estate name. The bottle's range markers are its colour, vintage, place and producer, with no separately named parcel or cuvée required to identify it.
Final Word
Château Ferrière is a Margaux estate founded by Gabriel Ferrière, purchased by the Villars family in 1988, and now managed by Claire Villars-Lurton.
