Sierras del Uruguay sits in the country's southeastern wine area, which extends across Maldonado and Rocha. It is Uruguay's main Atlantic-influenced wine country, with more altitude and geological variety than its other wine regions. Near Laguna Garzón, some soils come from crystalline basement formed 2.5 billion years ago. Maldonado also has crystalline rock with quartz, alluvial soils and gravel valleys. Its balasto is soft, permeable and well drained.
Cooling Atlantic breezes help southern vineyards retain acidity and freshness. Tannat, Uruguay's flagship grape, came originally from Southwest France but has found a different expression here: deeply coloured and tannic, often with riper dark fruit and a softer character than French examples. Producers make both unoaked Tannat and structured wines for ageing, alongside rosé, pét-nat and sparkling versions. Tannat is the grape name most often seen on Uruguayan labels.
