Uruguay's Atlántica sits along the southeastern coastal belt, especially Maldonado and Rocha. Atlantic cooling slows ripening, while breezes contribute acidity and greater flavour complexity. Reds include Tannat, Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Sauvignon Blanc and Albariño are among the white grapes.
Maldonado's ancient crystalline rock and well-drained gravel sit alongside granite, sand, clay and limestone. Tannat here can be mineral-rich and powerful, while Albariño can show a saline, savoury character. In Rocha, Atlantic cooling is associated with fresher wines. A Cabernet Franc from rocky soils and Atlantic winds is described as fresh and juicy.
