Chernivtsi lies in southwestern Ukraine, bordering Romania and Moldova. The oblast runs from the plateau between the Prut and Dniester rivers through foothills to the Carpathians, where elevations reach 1,565 metres.
The plateau has a moderate continental climate, while the Carpathians have a mountain climate. July temperatures range from 19-20°C on the plateau to 10-18°C in the mountains. Outside the mountains, the growing season lasts 205-215 days; in the mountain sector it is only 136-162 days, with greater frost pressure. Chernivtsi oblast was formed in 1940 from northern parts of Bukovyna and Bessarabia after Romania controlled the territory from 1919.
