Turkish Thrace is the European part of Turkey, between the Balkan borders and the Sea of Marmara. Vineyards lie across rolling hills and plains between the Black Sea and the Aegean. The climate carries maritime influence between Mediterranean and continental conditions: summers are warm without being extreme, winters are cool to cold, and rainfall is relatively even. This allows grapes to ripen gradually while holding on to acidity.
Clay-limestone soils are common, with pockets of sandy loam and alluvium. Papazkarası, meaning "Priest's Black," is the region's signature indigenous red grape. Its wines are juicy and medium-bodied, with bright acidity, supple tannins, and cherry, plum, and raspberry fruit. Some show a savory olive-like note. The Thrace grouping includes Kırklareli, Tekirdağ, and Çanakkale.
