Eastern Anatolia brings together wine areas around Elazığ, Malatya and Diyarbakır, rather than forming one uniform grape zone. Near Elazığ, vineyards sit at roughly 1,000 to 1,200 metres. Winters are very cold, while warm summer days give way to cooler nights. The Euphrates and the Keban and Karakaya dams moderate these conditions.
Öküzgözü is associated with Elazığ and Eastern Anatolia. Boğazkere belongs to Diyarbakır and the Mesopotamian plateau south of the Anatolian Highlands. Its small, dark, thick-skinned berries bring high tannin and darker fruit to regional wines. Blends of Öküzgözü and Boğazkere are an established local style, and contemporary producers also work with these native grapes.
