Turkey's Aegean wine region lies in the west, facing the Aegean Sea and the Greek islands. Its coastal vineyards, around Urla, Selçuk, Bodrum and Datça, are generally about 150 metres above sea level and have maritime conditions. Inland, Manisa, Denizli and Uşak include vineyards that can reach about 900 metres, with a more continental climate.
Summers are hot and winters mild. Soils range from clay loam at lower elevations to calcareous chalks. The region grows local and international grapes, including Bornova Misketi, Çalkarası, Sultaniye, Karalahna, Kuntra, Vasilaki and Shiraz. Urla also holds a traditional grape-harvest festival in August.
