Gotland is Sweden's largest island, with limestone soils, sea winds and more sunshine than many people expect this far north. Visby and Hoburg average slightly more than 2,000 sunshine hours a year in the 1991 to 2020 normal. July averages just above 17°C across most of the island, and the wind helps dry the vines after damp weather, reducing mould risk.
Gotland wines are associated with lively acidity and pronounced minerality. Producers make still and sparkling wines, with Solaris particularly suited to the cool climate: it ripens early and can be made dry, sweet or sparkling. Rondo usually goes into lighter reds and rosés. On the island's south coast, Gute Vingård grows Solaris, Phönix and Rondo.
Gotland is a useful name on Sweden's wine map, though not an official appellation. Swedish wines are currently classified with Sweden as their origin.
