Hot, dry conditions and Atlantic influence in Swartland favour concentrated, medium-bodied Syrah and Chenin Blanc. Syrah commonly combines cherry and blackcurrant with herbs, lavender and spice. Eben Sadie's first Columella bottling in 2000 helped draw attention to a new generation of Swartland wines. The Swartland Revolution promoted independent producers making wines from specific sites. Swartland Independent Producers set rules for grapes and cellar practices.
