Primorska lies in southwestern Slovenia and is the country's warmest wine region. Mediterranean influence reaches its four districts, Goriška Brda, Vipavska dolina, Kras and Slovenska Istra, with varying intensity. Merlot is the region's most widespread grape.
Vipavska dolina is Primorska's largest district and makes white, red, rosé and contemporary orange wines. Its local whites include Vipavec, Zelèn with pear and apple aromas, and floral, high-acid Pinela. In Goriška Brda, vineyards rise from valley floors to higher slopes. Cool afternoon winds from the Alps and warmer winds from the Gulf of Trieste meet over opoka marl, which is associated with mineral, fresh and elegant wines.
Kras lies on limestone beneath iron-rich terra rossa. Its Teran is a deep-purple red with pronounced acidity, sour-cherry and wild-berry flavours, juicy black fruit and minerality. Slovenska Istra is known for richly coloured Refošk, pale aromatic Malvasia and Yellow Muscat.
