Primorska's four districts are Goriška Brda, Vipavska dolina, Kras and Slovenska Istra. Mediterranean influence varies between them, and Merlot is the most widely grown grape. Vipavska dolina is the largest district. It makes whites, reds, rosés and orange wines, the last produced by fermenting white grapes with their skins. Local white wines include Vipavec, Zelèn with pear and apple aromas, and floral Pinela with high acidity. In Goriška Brda, vineyards rise from valley floors to slopes on opoka marl, with cool afternoon winds from the Alps and warmer winds from the Gulf of Trieste. Kras has limestone beneath iron-rich red terra rossa soil. Its Teran is a deep-purple red with pronounced acidity and sour-cherry, wild-berry and black-fruit flavours. Slovenska Istra makes deeply coloured Refošk reds and aromatic white wines from Malvasia and Yellow Muscat.
