Posavje follows the lower Sava through southeastern Slovenia, a hilly region of narrow valleys and steep vineyard slopes. Its three wine districts are Dolenjska, Bizeljsko-Sremič and Bela krajina, and lighter reds and whites are a common thread.
Marls and sandstones bound by limestone are widespread. Modra Frankinja and Žametovka are important reds; Laški Rizling and Kraljevina are important whites. Rumeni Plavec makes full-tasting whites in Dolenjska and Bizeljsko-Sremič, while Modra Frankinja is medium-full-bodied, harmonious and slightly spicy.
Dolenjska is known for light, low-alcohol Cviček with red-berry aromas, though it also makes varietal wines, rosés and traditional-method sparkling wines. Bizeljsko-Sremič produces refreshing red and white Bizeljčan wines. In Bela krajina, light-bodied Belokranjec and Metliška Črnina sit alongside growing interest in Yellow Muscat and Blaufränkisch.
