Slovak Tokaj is the northern continuation of the wider Tokaj region in Hungary. It lies in the Bodrog basin, at Slovakia's southeastern corner, and includes Bara, Čerhov, Černochov, Malá Tŕňa, Slovenské Nové Mesto, Veľká Tŕňa and Viničky.
Furmint, Lipovina and Yellow Muscat are the traditional grapes. Long, dry autumns and foggy mornings can encourage noble rot, while rocky volcanic soils hold warmth after sunset. Tokaj makes dry as well as sweet wines. Tokaji aszú has nutty, honeyed sweetness and firm acidity, while dry Furmint can bring honey and Golden Delicious apple notes. Cibéba is the local name for Botrytis-shriveled berries used in naturally sweet wines, though they are not assured every year. Wines age in tuff cellars in 150- or 300-litre oak barrels.
