Tejo

Tejo is a central Portuguese wine region shaped by the Tejo River. Its broad, fertile plains contrast with the hotter sandy soils of Charneca, while Campo, Bairro and Serras each bring their own conditions to the region's wines.

Tejo follows its namesake river through central Portugal. The north bank is more irregular, while broad plains spread across the south. Periodic flooding has left these river plains with very fertile soils. The region was called Ribatejo until 2009.

Campo, Bairro and Charneca are Tejo's three main soil environments, with Serras also included in the CVRTejo framework. Campo has fertile alluvial soils that suit white wines. Bairro's clay-limestone soils suit red grapes, while the hotter, sandy Charneca ripens grapes more quickly. Serras wines are noted for minerality and structure.

The region's climate and soils allow grapes to ripen while keeping natural acidity. Fernão Pires, Arinto, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay are among the main white grapes, and Touriga Nacional, Trincadeira, Castelão and Aragonez among the reds. Tejo whites are fresh and aromatic; the reds are full-bodied, complex and soft.
