Lisboa's vineyards stretch across plains, mountains and river country on the way to the Atlantic. Maritime exposure meets inland warmth, creating a region of varied soils, topography and microclimates rather than one fixed wine style.
Its nine controlled designations are Alenquer, Arruda, Bucelas, Carcavelos, Colares, Encostas d'Aire, Óbidos, Torres Vedras and Lourinhã. Vinho Regional Lisboa is the broader regional indication, alongside these more tightly delimited DOP names. Regional reds include Alicante Bouschet, Aragonez, Castelão, Tinta Miúda, Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional and Trincadeira; Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah are also permitted. Fernão Pires, Arinto, Malvasia and Vital are important white grapes.
Bucelas is closely tied to fresh, high-acid Arinto. Colares is known for Ramisco that can need long ageing, while Carcavelos suits the end of a meal. Óbidos includes both still and sparkling wines.
