The Sandomierz Upland in Poland has rolling hills above river valleys. Southeastern vineyard slopes receive plentiful sun, while the Vistula moderates local conditions. Loess soils lie over limestone-rich ground that retains water. Dominican monks established a monastery and an early vineyard in Sandomierz in 1226. A Dominican vineyard received a commercial certificate in 1238, and vineyards multiplied through the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. Winegrowing later declined as the climate cooled. The modern Dominican vineyard was founded on 8 May 2012 and made its first wine in five hundred years. Nine vineyards around Sandomierz form the Sandomierz Wine Trail. Plantings include Johanniter, Regent and Rondo, varieties bred from more than one vine species, alongside Riesling, Pinot Noir and Zweigelt. Whites can be aromatic and delicate.
