Zielona Góra is the historic centre of Lubuskie wine culture. It sits between the Oder and Bóbr rivers, where the surrounding hills have long been suited to grape growing. This was once an unusually northern place for commercial viticulture. The oldest documented local record dates from 1314, though local tradition places the arrival of vines in 1150.
Silvaner was a foundational variety, with Traminer, Blauer Spätburgunder, Ruländer, Goldschöndel, Blauschöndel and Müller-Thurgau also planted here. Riesling was grown on a smaller scale, while Traminer has remained in cultivation since its historical introduction. Sparkling wine belongs to the local story too, and Winobranie has celebrated the harvest since 1852. Today, growers work with Riesling, Solaris and Regent, while researching vines that survived in former wine districts.
