Rogaland lies in southwestern Norway, with North Sea coastline, the Boknafjord islands and inland mountain country. The open Boknafjord separates the county's south from Ryfylke and Haugalandet. Its geology runs from Precambrian bedrock in the southeast to Caledonian mountain-chain formations in the northwest.
The documented vineyard story begins at Hebnes in Ryfylke. The idea arose in a ferry queue at Ropeid, prompted by a climate thought milder than Ås, with early springs and mild winters around Jelsa and Foreneset. Hebnes farmers moved from pig farming to a vineyard in 2020, planted their first vines in spring 2021 and received tasting guests in 2022. The farm, where Vindafjorden, Sandsfjorden, Jelsafjorden and Nedstandsfjorden meet, became Rogaland's first vineyard. Rogaland is a county, not a legally delimited wine appellation.
