Pelagonija-Polog is North Macedonia's western wine region, in the south and southwest of the country. Vineyards lie on plateaus and small mountains between 600 and 680 metres. The high-mountain climate brings cold, humid winters and hot, dry summers, with an average of 87 days above 25°C and 570 to 700 millimetres of annual rain.
Brown soil is most common, with vertisol, tchernozem and cinnamon soils in some areas. The region's six wine districts are Prilep, Bitola, Prespa, Ohrid, Kichevo and Tetovo. Red grapes include Cabernet Sauvignon, Gamay, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Prokupec and Vranec. Riesling, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Zhilavka and Smederevka are grown for white wines. Across the region, the climate supports both freshness and ripeness in the wines.
