The Achterhoek planted its first vines in spring 2004 and now has more than thirty hectares across roughly twenty vineyards. Within the broader region, the protected Achterhoek Winterswijk BOB covers all of Winterswijk municipality in the east, reaching the German border.
Much of the appellation sits on the East Netherlands Plateau. Its soils shift and overlap, with loam and limestone rather than the river clay and cover sand farther west. Sandy topsoil helps manage water, and loam contributes fullness while helping the soil hold moisture. The growing season averages 15.58°C. Cooler nights are associated with freshness and fruit, while warmer maximum temperatures and sunshine aid ripening. Dry reds show dark red fruit, including blackberries and cherries, and some whites are barrel-aged for a fuller style. Rosé, sparkling white wine and sweet red liqueur wine are also made here.
