Zacatecas

Across the state of Zacatecas in north-central Mexico, vineyards grow at high altitude in dry, semi-desert conditions. Most grape plantings supply industrial uses and table grapes. Wine growers work with red varieties including Syrah, Merlot and Tempranillo, and white varieties such as Chardonnay, Viognier and Sauvignon Blanc.

Wine was already traded in Zacatecas's sixteenth-century market. Today, around 3,500 hectares are planted to grapes, mostly for industrial uses and table grapes. Vineyards lie around 2,000 metres above sea level in dry, semi-desert conditions. Plantings include the white grapes Chardonnay, Viognier and Sauvignon Blanc, and red varieties such as Syrah, Merlot, Tempranillo, Cabernet, Malbec and Nebbiolo. New wine projects and a wine-tourism route are becoming established.
