Guanajuato

Guanajuato's modern wine industry is young: a 2022 account described it as less than two decades old. Family projects, personal investment and property ventures have all contributed to its growth. The vineyards are spread across the state, rather than belonging to one legally delimited wine appellation. The warm, high-altitude plains have arid conditions and well-drained sandy soils. Day-night temperature differences can exceed 20°C, and a vineyard's position on a mountain can change its growing conditions. Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir are grown here. Producers also make orange wine, a white wine fermented in contact with its grape skins. Vineyard visits often connect winemaking with the state's history and its longer association with agave spirits.
