Coahuila

Most of Coahuila's vineyards lie in the south, across Parras de la Fuente, Arteaga and Saltillo. In Valle de Parras, an oasis in the state's semi-desert, high-elevation vineyards grow a broad range of red and white grapes. Parras also has a wine history dating to 1594.

Parras, in southern Coahuila, is where the cultural record places Mexico's first winery, established in 1594. Winegrowing now reaches beyond Parras de la Fuente to Arteaga and Saltillo, the other principal producing municipalities in the south of the state.

Valle de Parras is often called an oasis in Coahuila's semi-desert. Its vineyards stand about 1,450 metres above sea level, in soils of sand, silt and clay, while warm days and cooler nights aid Cabernet Sauvignon ripening. Red varieties include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Tempranillo, Lenoir and Rosa del Perú; Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Semillon and Colombard are also grown. Valle de Parras Tempranillo is medium-bodied, red-fruited and smooth. Wineries work with both historic methods and contemporary techniques, making room for a wider range of styles.
