Winegrowing in Chihuahua has a long record. Parral and El Paso were identified as principal Mexican wine-producing locations in the eighteenth century. A 2019 state account listed 23 wine houses and 242 hectares under vine, and noted 43 medals for Chihuahua wines in national and international competitions, including the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles.
State policy treats vineyard planting as an agricultural reconversion opportunity and an alternative crop linked to regional development. Water management and adaptation to adverse conditions are practical concerns. Research in Cuauhtémoc and Chihuahua municipality has examined Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Syrah and Merlot. Across the state's multiple microclimates, planting sites can affect grape yield and quality. The findings concern red-wine varieties rather than defining one fixed Chihuahua style.
