Baja California

Baja California is Mexico's principal wine-producing region, with seven wine valleys named in official tourism material. Valle de Guadalupe sits at the centre of the country's wine industry, but it is one part of a wider region. Differences in climate across the valleys help explain the range of wine styles.

Baja California is Mexico's principal wine-producing region. Official tourism material names seven wine valleys: Tanamá, La Grulla, San Vicente, Ojos Negros, Santo Tomás, San Jacinto and Valle de Guadalupe. Valle de Guadalupe sits at the centre of Mexico's wine industry, but it is one valley within the region, and its name is geographic rather than a grape variety.

Climate differs across the valleys. San Antonio de las Minas and San Vicente were classified as temperate-warm region IV, while Guadalupe Valley and Santo Tomás were warm to very warm region V. Evapotranspiration was 15% lower in the former pair, which may mean a difference in ripeness and freshness. Baja California produces more than one wine style and its wines are often paired with fresh seafood, meat and valley produce.
