Aguascalientes has a winegrowing tradition that its tourism authority dates back more than 400 years. Vineyards sit 1,700 to 2,400 metres above sea level, where the climate is semi-dry and average annual temperatures are 16 to 17°C. The viticultural area includes El Llano, Cosío, Rincón de Romos, Asientos, Tepezalá, Pabellón de Arteaga and San Francisco de los Romo.
Grape growing has never been only about wine. In 2012, 75% of planted vineyard area went to juice and concentrate processing, 14% to table grapes and the remainder to wine grapes. Salvador was a leading processing variety, while Red Globe was a leading table grape. The official wine route brings together vineyards, wineries and tastings in Jesús María, Pabellón de Arteaga, Rincón de Romos and the capital city.
