On Gozo, clay-carbonate soils lie over porous limestone. The limestone lets vine roots reach water below, while the clay keeps the root zone cooler than in Malta's sandy or loamy soils. The island's hills form valleys that open toward the sea, and grapes generally mature up to a week later than comparable grapes in Malta.
DOK Gozo covers wines from grapes grown on the island. Gozo's sea-influenced Mediterranean climate brings hot, dry, very sunny summers and mild winters. The wines are associated with mature fruit, retained acidity, structure and balance, and the designation permits Chardonnay, Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Vermentino and Cabernet Franc.
