Gozo

Gozo is an island in Malta, with hilly vineyards, clay-carbonate soils over limestone and valleys opening towards the sea. Grapes generally ripen up to a week later than comparable grapes on the main island of Malta. The DOK Gozo designation identifies wines made from grapes grown on Gozo.

Gozo's hilly vineyards have clay-carbonate soils over porous limestone, with valleys opening towards the sea. The Mediterranean climate brings hot, dry, sunny summers and mild winters. Grapes generally ripen up to a week later than comparable grapes on the main island of Malta. DOK Gozo is a protected wine designation requiring grapes grown on Gozo. Permitted varieties include Chardonnay, Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Vermentino and Cabernet Franc. The wines can combine ripe fruit flavours with retained acidity.
