Almaty's vineyards do not sit in one uniform landscape. The region spans sharply continental plains and mountain slopes, with several natural zones. Summers are hot and dry, while winters are cold.
Assa Valley, near Almaty, is an older wine-growing area being rediscovered. Its vineyards lie at about 1,000 metres beneath the snow-covered Tian Shan mountains. Fertile soils and a fresh breeze are reported to slow ripening and support freshness. Wine production there is part of a revival of historic wine-making culture, and a winery founded in 2006 belongs to that recent chapter. Wines from the area received a reported international gold medal in 2015.
Bacchus names Rkatsiteli, Muscat, Saperavi and Cabernet as the traditional leading varieties of the Almaty foothills. This Soviet-rooted variety base now sits alongside newer international and New World-oriented wine positioning.
