Valle d'Aosta's vineyards trace the valley floor from Pont-Saint-Martin and Donnas to Morgex, below Mont Blanc. The growing season is shaped by scarce rainfall, constant ventilation and wide shifts between daytime and night-time temperatures. Grapes ripen quickly, developing distinctive vine aromas.
The Valle d'Aosta DOC, recognized in 1985, covers seven geographical sub-denominations: Blanc de Morgex et de La Salle, Enfer d'Arvier, Torrette, Nus, Chambave, Arnad-Montjovet and Donnas. In Morgex and La Salle, vineyards commonly lie between 900 and 1,300 metres. Prié Blanc belongs particularly to these upper-valley areas, where the wines can be brisk and mineral. Chambave and Torrette are associated with Petit Rouge-dominant wines. Fumin is dark and savoury, while Petite Arvine makes crisp whites. The DOC also includes still, passito, superiore and classic-method sparkling wines, and labels may use either Valle d'Aosta or Vallée d'Aoste.
