Oltrepò Pavese lies south of the Po in the Northern Apennines. Its traditional-method sparkling wines gain their bubbles from a second fermentation in the bottle. Specialities include blanc de noirs and rosé de noirs, white and rosé sparkling wines from dark grapes. An effort to distinguish Pinot Nero blanc de noirs began in 1984. The area's other appellations include Bonarda dell'Oltrepò Pavese, Casteggio, Buttafuoco dell'Oltrepò Pavese, Sangue di Giuda, Pinot nero dell'Oltrepò Pavese and Oltrepò Pavese Pinot grigio.
