Thessaly

Thessaly's vineyards are mainly found on the hillsides around its central plain. Its three PDOs range from coastal Anchialos to Rapsani at the foot of Mount Olympus, where vineyards run from 100 to 700 metres, with Mesenikola completing the trio. Limniona, distinct from Limnio, is grown mainly in Tyrnavos and Karditsa.

Thessaly sits in central Greece, where most farmland is given to cereals and cotton. Its better vineyard sites are often on the hillsides around the plain. Mountains shelter the vines from wind, though moisture can settle at lower elevations and raise fungal disease pressure.

The three PDO wine zones offer a useful introduction. Anchialos makes Roditis-led whites shaped by sea breezes, with no skin contact or oak ageing. Mesenikola, at 200 to 600 metres, blends Black Messenikola with Carignan and Syrah into pale, aromatic wines. At Rapsani, beneath Mount Olympus, Xinomavro, Krasato and Stavroto are blended in equal parts and aged in large oak barrels. Limniona, grown mainly in Tyrnavos and Karditsa, can bring deeper colour, red and black fruit, herbal notes, soft tannins and fairly high acidity.
