Spring reaches Hessische Bergstraße a few days ahead of many surrounding places, and almond blossom marks the change. Germany's smallest wine-growing region by the Hessian government's area measure, it has 440 hectares and 23 individual vineyard sites across two separate areas: Starkenburg near Darmstadt and Umstadt.
Riesling accounts for almost 60 percent of the vineyard area. Its wines are described as elegant and fruity, while Ruländer, Müller-Thurgau and Grüner Silvaner also have a place here. In Umstadt, Müller-Thurgau makes light, easy-drinking wines; the local Rieslings and Silvaners are somewhat fuller. Bensheim Rieslings are known for piquant acidity and elegance.
Roter Riesling has red-tinged skins but makes white wine. It has lower acidity, with apple and pear notes, and the region has more than 15 hectares of it.
